Beyonce đã đạt một cột mốc mới trong sự nghiệp của mình khi nhận được tới 11 đề cử tại MTV Video Music Awards 2016 (VMA 2016). Theo sát Beyonce là Adele với 8 đề cử cho Hello – MV đình đám từng phá vỡ nhiều kỷ lục khi ra mắt vào cuối năm 2015. Hai giọng ca nổi tiếng này sẽ tranh đấu nhau quyết liệt ở một số hạng mục, trong đó có hạng mục quan trọng nhất là Video của năm. Cụ thể, hạng mục này có sự góp mặt của Formation – Beyonce, Hello – Adele, Sorry – Justin Bieber, Hotline Bling – Drake và Famous – Kanye West.
Một số nghệ sĩ khác cũng được đề cử tại lễ trao giải MTV Video Music Awards 2016 là Calvin Harris với How Deep Is Your Love và This Is What You Came For hợp tác với Rihanna, Fifth Harmony và Ariana Grande. Trong khi đó, Bryson Tiller, Desiigner, Zara Larsson, Lukas Graham và DNCE được đề cử giải Nghệ sĩ mới xuất sắc nhất.
Năm nay, lễ trao giải sẽ được tổ chức tại Madison Square Garden, thành phố New York vào ngày 28/8.
