Với những vụ bê bối về sự thiếu đa dạng của HFPA (Hiệp hội báo chí nước ngoài Hollywood) và các hoạt động kinh doanh đáng ngờ, chương trình trao giải vào năm 2022 của Quả cầu vàng đã bị NBC bỏ rơi và những người nổi tiếng tẩy chay. Tuy nhiên, sau những nỗ lực giành lại tình cảm của những người trong ngành, HFPA đã nhận lại được sự "tha thứ" bước đầu bằng việc lễ trao giải năm 2023 sẽ được phát sóng trực tiếp trở lại, mặc dù nó đã mất vị trí chính vào tối Chủ nhật và thay vào đó sẽ phát sóng vào Thứ Ba, ngày 10 tháng 1, trên NBC và Peacock.
Và trong tối 12/12 (giờ Việt Nam), HFPA đã chính thức công bố các đề cử của Quả cầu vàng 2023. Theo danh sách được công bố "Avatar: The Way of Water", "Elvis", "The Fabelmans," "Tár" và "Top Gun: Maverick" sẽ cạnh tranh nhau tại hạng mục dành cho Phim điện ảnh hay nhất.
